Pothwari Translation Services

Pothwari never appears on a form. Pakistan counts it inside Punjabi, US court language lists name Urdu and Punjabi, and a speaker's own documents are written in Urdu, so the language is invisible on paper and decisive in a room. Pothwari is the home speech of the plateau north of the Salt Range: Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Gujar Khan, Kahuta. Jhelum is roughly the line where the Majha Punjabi of Lahore takes over. Northward it runs into the Pahari of Azad Kashmir and the Mirpuri that diaspora families carry, all on one continuum, and a linguist raised anywhere in that belt handles the lot.

Union Council and NADRA Records in a Certified Pothwari Translation

The paperwork is the standard Pakistani set and all of it is Urdu or English. A birth certificate from the Union Council where the birth was registered, which NADRA now prints bilingually; the B-Form, or Child Registration Certificate, which cannot issue without that Union Council record; the CNIC at eighteen; a nikah nama in Urdu.

Two things go wrong repeatedly. The first is the English half of a bilingual certificate being incomplete, so a translation copied from the English column leaves entries missing that the Urdu column supplies. We translate the Urdu in full and state which fields the English side left empty. The second is a name spelled one way on an older handwritten Union Council entry and another on the CNIC, which is ordinary and looks like a discrepancy if nobody explains it. Pothwari in Urdu Script as Court Evidence

There is one place Pothwari does appear in writing, and it turns up in litigation more than anywhere else: people type it in Urdu script. A WhatsApp thread between relatives in Gujar Khan and New Jersey, a note, a voice message transcribed by a family member. It looks like Urdu on the page and it is not Urdu, and an Urdu translator working through it produces something fluent and wrong.

The method we use is to separate the two. The Urdu passages are translated as Urdu, the Pothwari passages as Pothwari, and the translation marks which is which line by line, because in a custody or protective order matter the difference decides what a party actually said. Booking a Pothwari Interpreter Instead of Punjabi

Court language lists are the trap here. A clerk looking for an interpreter finds Punjabi and Urdu on the roster, books one, and the hearing proceeds with a witness from Kahuta whose answers are being tidied into Lahore Punjabi by a well-meaning professional. The record reads smoothly and the witness's own words are gone.

Pothwari Medical and USCIS Interpreting for the Older Generation

The people who need this service are rarely the ones arranging it. A grandmother from Rawalpindi who handles a pharmacy counter in English and cannot describe chest pain in it. A parent at an adjustment interview who went through Urdu-medium school forty years ago and still thinks in Pothwari. A hospital receiving federal funds owes that patient a professional interpreter at no charge, and families almost never hear it.

At USCIS the applicant brings the interpreter, who must be an adult and not the petitioner, and completes the interpreter declaration. The reason to use a professional rather than a nephew is that an officer is recording the applicant's own words; an interpreter who upgrades a halting answer into a fluent one conceals how much the person actually followed, and that becomes a problem later rather than never. Pothwari Translation and Interpreting Cost

The certified document work is priced as Urdu, from about $24.95 per page as a US market guide, with longer text by the source word; there is no rare-language surcharge for pages that are in fact Urdu. Message threads and recordings are quoted after we have seen them, since mixed Urdu and Pothwari takes longer than either alone. On-site interpreting runs in the usual $45 to $95 hourly band with a two-hour minimum, and remote sessions are quoted per assignment. The pricing page carries the bands.
