The recurring problem on Pakistani files is not language, it is layers. NADRA issues a clean computerized certificate in Urdu and English, and it looks like the whole answer, so that is what gets filed. The underlying record, the union council entry or the marriage contract, is handwritten Urdu and stays in a drawer. Then a Request for Evidence arrives asking for the document that was actually completed at the time.

Certified Urdu Translation of NADRA Documents for USCIS

USCIS works to 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3): a full English translation of anything not in English, certified by the translator as complete and accurate. NADRA certificates are printed bilingually, so people assume no translation is needed. The Urdu side usually carries entries the English side summarizes or omits, and the stamps and endorsements are Urdu only, which is why we translate the document rather than transcribing the English half of it.

Births and marriages in Pakistan are registered locally, with union councils, cantonment boards, municipal corporations and the Capital Development Authority in Islamabad all issuing records, before NADRA prints the computerized version. The State Department's reciprocity schedule accepts NADRA's Child Registration Certificate, the B-form, or a Family Registration Certificate in place of a birth registration record.

Nikah Nama Translation from Urdu

The nikah nama is a prescribed form of numbered columns, twenty-five on the standard version, and it is the legal instrument of the marriage rather than a souvenir. Registration with the union council has been required since the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance of 1961, and the registrar who solemnizes the marriage fills the columns in by hand.

Every column gets translated, including the ones left blank and the ones struck through. The columns recording dower, any conditions the parties agreed, and whether the right to pronounce divorce was delegated to the wife are the ones with legal consequences, and a struck-out entry there is a decision, not a slip of the pen. Urdu Divorce Certificate and Family Court Translation

Proving that a Pakistani marriage ended takes more than a pronouncement. Under the same 1961 Ordinance notice goes to the chairman of the union council, a reconciliation period of ninety days runs, and only then does the council issue the certificate that records the divorce as effective. That certificate, not the talaq deed on its own, is what a US filing usually needs.

Nastaliq Handwriting and Names in a Certified Urdu Translation

Urdu is written in nastaliq, a sloping style in which letters change shape and stack, and a registrar's handwriting in nastaliq is a different reading skill from printed Urdu. This is where Pakistani documents are most often mistranslated, and the errors are quiet ones: a dower figure misread, a date transposed, a condition guessed at. We assign people who read handwriting for this work and mark anything genuinely illegible rather than filling the gap.

Names carry the same care. Muhammad, Mohammad and Mohammed are one name, as are Hussain and Husain, Siddiqui and Siddiqi. The passport spelling goes in the header, the Urdu stays as written, and the variants are noted. Many Pakistani records also carry the father's name as a separate field, which is not a middle name and should not become one on a US form.

Apostille, Attestation and Certified Urdu Translation

Pakistan joined the Apostille Convention with effect from 9 March 2023, which changed the route for documents moving in both directions. A US public document carrying an apostille no longer needs attestation by a Pakistani mission, and a Pakistani public document can now be apostilled rather than run through the older attestation chain. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs still provides ordinary attestation services alongside it.

None of that is required by USCIS, which asks for the certified translation and not an authenticated original. Universities, licensing boards and foreign authorities often do want it, so check before paying for the run. Anything attached is translated with the document; see apostille translation.

Urdu Translation Cost and Turnaround

Urdu sits mid-range: plenty of US-based translators work in it, but handwritten material narrows the field quickly and is priced accordingly. A NADRA certificate follows the per-page guide, from around $24.95 as a market figure, and is usually back within 24 hours of a confirmed quote. A handwritten nikah nama takes longer, typically two business days, because the columns have to be read carefully rather than skimmed. Court files are priced per source word. Interpreting brings up something documents never do: Urdu is a second language for most Pakistanis. A person who handles it comfortably day to day may reach for words under cross-examination and sound evasive when they are simply working in their second language.
