Nobody's birth certificate is written in Pahari. The language of Mirpur, Kotli and the Pothohar has no settled written standard, so a Pahari file is a Pakistani file in Urdu, and what a Pahari linguist adds is knowing the districts, the village spellings and the family names inside it. Start with the word itself, because it names more than one thing. On this page Pahari means the Pahari-Pothwari speech of Azad Kashmir and the plateau around Rawalpindi, the language most British and American Mirpuri families grew up with. The same word also labels unrelated hill languages in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Nepal. Confirming which one you mean takes one question at intake and saves sending entirely the wrong linguist.

A second label causes as much trouble. Families from Azad Kashmir often describe themselves as Kashmiri, and for most of them the home language is Pahari or Mirpuri rather than the Kashmiri of the Srinagar valley, which is a different language needing a different interpreter. Azad Kashmir Records in a Certified Pahari Translation

The document set is Pakistani and it is in Urdu. A computerised birth certificate issued by the Union Council through NADRA, printed bilingually with the English column frequently half completed; an older Urdu-only Union Council certificate for anyone born before computerization; a CNIC; a Family Registration Certificate. Ask a Pahari family for their papers and not one page will be in Pahari.

So the honest description of the work is a careful Urdu translation done by someone who knows Azad Kashmir. That matters more than it sounds. A Kotli registrar's handwriting, a Mirpur Union Council stamp and a Pothohar village name spelled three different ways in Urdu are things a translator trained on Karachi paperwork guesses at. Nikah Nama Translation in a Pahari Family's USCIS File

This is where marriage-based petitions go wrong, and it is worth a paragraph on its own. The nikah nama is a printed Urdu form with numbered clauses, completed by hand, and a translation that summarizes it is not a translation. Every clause has to appear, including the dower entries, the columns left blank and any note written in the margin.

The blank columns are the part people find strange, and they are exactly what an officer looks at. A clause left empty carries meaning about what was and was not agreed, and a translation that omits the empty rows has removed evidence. Family Registration Certificate Translation for a Pahari Petition

Marriage within the extended family is common in Mirpur, and a US petition often has to show how two families relate. The NADRA Family Registration Certificate is the document that does it, listing household members against a head of family, and it is the page most likely to be sent untranslated because it looks like a table.

We translate it as a table, with every relationship term rendered rather than approximated. Urdu kinship vocabulary distinguishes relations that English collapses into cousin or uncle, and flattening them destroys the only useful thing the certificate says. Pahari Interpreters When an Urdu Booking Has Failed

Most of our Pahari interpreting requests are repairs. A hospital booked Urdu, the history stalled; a court booked Punjabi from its language list, and the witness followed opening questions and lost the thread when counsel picked up speed. Urdu is a school and television language for a Pahari speaker, not a home one, and people nod through it out of politeness. Lahore Punjabi sits closer to it and is still a different language.

Who actually needs one. Pakistani Americans numbered about 684,000 by ancestry in 2023, concentrated around greater New York, and the working-age generation rarely needs an interpreter at all. The bookings are for a sponsored mother at a green card interview, a grandfather at a cardiology consultation, a shopkeeper who copes in English until he is put under oath. Female interpreters are arranged on request for obstetric and gynecological appointments, which for this community is a practical necessity rather than a preference. Questions we get asked

Is Pahari the same as Mirpuri and Pothwari?

For booking purposes, yes. They are mutually intelligible varieties of one language across Azad Kashmir and the Pothohar Plateau, and a linguist raised anywhere in that belt handles all three. The word Pahari also names unrelated hill languages in India and Nepal, so we confirm the family is from Pakistan or Azad Kashmir before assigning.

My documents are all in Urdu. Why would I ask for a Pahari translator?

Because the Urdu on them describes Azad Kashmir. A translator who knows the districts reads a Kotli registrar's hand, recognizes a Mirpur Union Council stamp and romanizes a village name the way your other documents do. The certified translation is an Urdu one and is priced as such.

Can you just summarize the nikah nama?

No, and you should not accept a summary from anyone. USCIS expects the complete form: every numbered clause, the dower entries, the empty columns and the marginal notes. An empty clause tells the officer something, and leaving it out removes evidence from the file.

The hospital says an Urdu interpreter is fine. Is it?

Sometimes, for a short and simple visit. Once it is a medical history, a consent discussion or anything an older speaker has to describe in their own words, it is not. Urdu is the school language for a Pahari speaker, and patients follow part of it and appear to follow all of it. Ask for Pahari, Mirpuri or Pothwari by name.
