Maithili is spoken on both sides of the India and Nepal border, in the Bihar districts around Darbhanga and Madhubani and across the Madhesh plains. Nepal's 2021 census put it second only to Nepali as a mother tongue, with more than three million speakers there and a much larger base in Bihar. Speakers here are scattered rather than concentrated, and the families we work with commonly have relatives on both sides of the border and documents to match.

Maithili Family Records from Bihar and from Madhesh Province

On the Indian side, births and deaths are registered by the Registrar of Births and Deaths through a municipal corporation, a nagar parishad or a gram panchayat, and the certificate prints in Hindi and English or in English alone. Bihar registrars do not issue in Maithili and never have.

On the Nepali side, a family from a municipality or rural municipality in Madhesh holds birth and marriage records from its ward office, bilingual in Nepali and English since 2013. So the certified work in front of you is Hindi to English, Nepali to English, or both, which is usually cheaper than a Maithili job and worth knowing before you order one. Devanagari and Tirhuta Script in a Certified Maithili Translation

Maithili is written in Devanagari today, which is why a Hindi translator will tell you they can read it. They can read the letters. Whether they can read the language is a different question, and it is the question that decides whether an affidavit comes out meaning what it says.

Older Maithili material uses Tirhuta, the historical Mithilakshar script, and it appears in family papers, land records and religious documents that a Devanagari reader cannot decode at all. If you have pages that look like nothing else in the bundle, photograph one and send it with the quote request so the file reaches a specialist rather than bouncing back a week later. Maithili Interpreters for Clinics, Courts and USCIS Interviews

Working-age Maithili speakers generally carry Hindi or Nepali as well, and the interpreter is nearly always for the generation above them: a grandmother in for a cardiac review, a father at an emergency room, a parent at an adjustment interview after a child's petition. Hospitals receiving federal financial assistance must provide the interpreter at no cost, which most families only learn after paying for one.

Maithili families communicate across the border by voice message, and those recordings end up as exhibits in custody disputes, divorce matters and hardship claims more often than any written Maithili document does. A recording is not a translation job on its own; it is two jobs.
