Kapingamarangi is a Polynesian outlier language spoken on Kapingamarangi Atoll, at the southern edge of Pohnpei State in the Federated States of Micronesia, and in Porakiet, the Kapingamarangi settlement on Pohnpei island. A 1995 count put its speakers at around 3,000, split roughly between the two places. Its nearest relative is Nukuoro, and its wider family is the one that includes Samoan, not the Micronesian languages spoken around it.

Kapingamarangi or Pohnpeian Interpreter: Why the Label Matters

Pohnpeian is Micronesian; Kapingamarangi is Polynesian. Living on the same island does not make the languages mutually intelligible. Some Kapingamarangi speakers raised in Porakiet also speak Pohnpeian or English, and some do not, particularly those who grew up on the atoll. The only reliable method is to ask the person which language they want to use and pass that answer on.

If they choose Kapingamarangi, we assign a Kapingamarangi interpreter. If none who works directly into English is free for your date, we say so plainly. A relay through a second language is an option only when the person confirms it is a language they speak well, and only with your agreement. Medicaid eligibility for Compact of Free Association migrants was restored from December 27, 2020, which brought more Micronesian patients into clinics that carry that obligation.

There is no certification exam in Kapingamarangi anywhere in the United States, and a courthouse roster will not carry the language.
