Dagbani is the language of Dagbon, spoken by roughly 1.2 million people around Tamale and Yendi in Ghana’s Northern Region and across the border in northern Togo. It is a Gur language of the Oti-Volta group, mutually intelligible with Mampruli and closely related to Nanuni, and it is not related to Akan at all.

The Moshi-Dagomba Label and Which Dagbani Translation You Need

Older agency lists carry a heading called Moshi-Dagomba, and it covers two separate languages in two separate countries. Mossi, also written Moore, belongs to Burkina Faso and is much the larger. Dagbani belongs to northern Ghana. They share a branch of the Gur family and a long shared history, and an interpreter works reliably in one of them, not both.

The practical consequence is a document question, not a linguistic one. A Burkinabè applicant holds an extrait d’acte de naissance in French, so that file is a French job: see French. A Ghanaian Dagomba applicant holds an English certificate and needs nothing translated at all. Name the country on the booking and half the confusion disappears.

Ghanaian Records in a Dagbani File Come in English

The Births and Deaths Registry issues Ghanaian birth certificates in English, the National Identification Authority issues the Ghana Card in English, and school results and police clearance follow. 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), which requires a certified English translation, applies to foreign-language documents and therefore not to these.

Certified Dagbani Translation for a Muslim Marriage Record

Dagbon is largely Muslim, and marriage petitions from the north often rest on a Mohammedan marriage rather than a customary or ordinance one. The Marriages Act, 1884-1985 (Cap. 127) provides for this: after the celebration, the bridegroom, the bride’s wali, two witnesses and a priest licensed under the Act attend the office of the district chief executive within a week to register the marriage, which is entered in the register and in duplicate certificates.

Dagbani Spelling, Names and the Certified Document Translation

Written Dagbani uses the Latin alphabet with the added letters ɛ, ɣ, ŋ, ɔ and ʒ, plus digraphs such as gb, kp and ŋm. Handwriting and phone keyboards drop all of them, so a letter can spell the same village three ways and lose the distinction between two different words.

Names carry a second layer. A Dagomba man may hold an Arabic name used at the mosque, a Dagbani name used at home, and a passport that records one, the other, or a fused version of both. We keep the travel document spelling in the English text, reproduce each original form exactly, and set out the relationship in a translator’s note rather than choosing silently between them.

Interpreting is the larger half of Dagbani demand and it runs almost entirely by video or telephone, because Dagbani speakers in the United States are few and widely spread.
