Tetum Interpreter

Timor-Leste's constitution names Tetum and Portuguese as the official languages and keeps Indonesian and English as working languages of the civil service. A single Timorese witness can carry vocabulary from all of it, and a good Tetum interpreter has to recognize each layer as it appears.

Tetum Interpreter for Tetun Prasa and Tetun Terik

Tetun Prasa, the Tetum of Dili, is the lingua franca of the country and is laced with Portuguese loanwords. Tetun Terik, spoken in parts of the south and the border districts, is the older and more conservative variety, with differences in vocabulary and verb forms. A Dili-raised interpreter serves most clients without difficulty. An elderly speaker from a rural district may need someone familiar with Terik, and that is worth finding out before the interview rather than halfway through it.

Tetum Interpreter Paired with Portuguese or Indonesian

Technical and official vocabulary is where Tetum borrows most, and where a speaker's schooling shows. One client describes an arrest, a hospital procedure or a land dispute using Indonesian terms; another uses Portuguese ones. An interpreter who does not recognize the borrowed word will pause, guess or ask for a repeat at the worst moment.

So we ask which language the speaker was schooled in and assign a Tetum interpreter who also handles that language. For a long hearing with heavy switching we can place a second interpreter, Tetum with Portuguese or Tetum with Indonesian, so that no part of the testimony falls between two chairs. Tetum Interpreter for Asylum and USCIS Interviews

USCIS returned the job of finding an interpreter to the affirmative asylum applicant on September 13, 2023, so a Timorese applicant who will not proceed in English arrives with one. That person has to be 18 or older and fluent in both languages, and cannot be the attorney, a witness, an official of the Timorese government or someone whose own asylum claim is still awaiting interview. Arriving without a qualified one can be treated as a failure to appear.

Because the interpreter attends the asylum office, a rare language like Tetum often means travel, and the quote says so. Tetum Court Interpreter by Video

There is no Tetum court certification exam in any US state. A court that needs Tetum qualifies the interpreter on the record and, for a language this rare, usually agrees to a video appearance. Legal concepts such as bail, plea or probation have no settled Tetum equivalents, so the interpreter may need a moment to explain rather than name, and a judge who knows that in advance allows the time.

Tetum Medical Interpreter for Timorese Patients

A clinic that takes federal funds must give a Tetum-speaking patient language assistance at no cost, and families rarely know that. Tuberculosis follow-up, prenatal care and chronic disease clinics are the usual settings. Where Tetum lacks a settled term for a diagnosis, the interpreter describes it and tells the clinician a description was used, then asks the patient to repeat the instructions back.
