Prism Language Solutions treats Sylheti as its own assignment rather than a version of Bengali. On paper there is usually nothing to argue about: Bangladesh issues its records in Bangla, so a certified Sylheti translation is a Bangla translation handled by someone who knows Sylhet and its place names. In the room it is a different matter entirely, and a Sylheti speaker given a Dhaka-trained interpreter is the most common language-access failure we are asked to repair.

A very large share of the people recorded as Bengali speakers in American hospitals, schools and courts are in fact Sylheti speakers. The Sylhet region sent migrants abroad long before the rest of Bangladesh did, first to Britain and then here, and the communities in New York, Paterson, Detroit and Atlanta are heavily Sylheti. Sylheti or Bengali: Which Interpreter to Book

One question at intake settles it: which district is the family from? Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj or Sunamganj as the answer means the booking should read Sylheti. We ask this even when the request says Bengali, and we ask it before assigning anybody, because the correction costs a phone call now and an adjourned hearing later.

There is a practical wrinkle worth knowing. Since no state examines court interpreters in Sylheti, a bench asking for a credentialed interpreter is asking for a Bengali credential, and what we look for in that case is a Sylheti speaker who happens to hold one. That is a narrower pool than either category alone, so tell us the date early. Compare Bengali interpreter if the family turns out not to be from the northeast.

Sylheti Interpreters for Hospitals, USCIS and Court Hearings

Medical work dominates. The patient is usually an older parent or a recently arrived spouse whose everyday English handles a bus timetable and not a medication schedule, and the family has been managing with a teenage relative. Federally funded providers must supply the interpreter at no cost to the patient under 45 CFR 92.201. Video is fine for a routine consult; for a hard diagnosis or a discharge with an elderly patient we want someone in the room.

At USCIS the routine work is family-based interviews, with protection claims behind them. An officer is weighing the applicant's own words, hesitations included, so an interpreter who reaches for a standard Bengali word the speaker did not use has altered the account. Each linguist is briefed to render and add nothing, and a bilingual relative does not take that chair. Certified Sylheti Translation When the Documents Are in Bangla

Sylheti is very rarely written. It once had its own script, Sylheti Nagri, used mostly for religious and popular literature, and it survives now in manuscripts and revival projects rather than in anything a government office issues. So every record a family brings us from Bangladesh is in Bangla, and 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) treats it as a Bangla document.

That is not a reason to send the file to any Bangla translator. The names and places are Sylheti, and a translator who has never seen them will produce a spelling nobody in the family recognizes. Sylheti Place Names and Spellings on a Birth Record

Here is where Sylheti files actually come apart. A village in Beanibazar or Golapganj was written into a paper register in the 1990s by a clerk working from speech, written differently on the reprinted certificate, and romanized a third way on the passport. Personal names go the same route, and the honorifics and family titles used in the region add another layer.

We render each version as it appears, spell names to the passport controlling the filing, and set the variants out in a translator's note so a USCIS officer sees one village and one person rather than three of each. Where a record was reissued from the older register, we describe both documents by what they are instead of presenting the newer print as the original entry.

English into Sylheti: Why a Printed Translation Rarely Helps

Hospitals and school districts ask us for Sylheti versions of consent forms, appointment letters and parent notices, and we usually talk them out of it. There is no standard written Sylheti that an ordinary reader has been taught, so a printed Sylheti leaflet reaches almost nobody: the literate reader was schooled in Bangla and the older reader may not read confidently at all.
