Siswati Translation Services

Two countries issue documents to Siswati speakers, and neither issues them in Siswati. Eswatini registers births, deaths and marriages through its Ministry of Home Affairs in English, and South Africa does the same for the Siswati-speaking districts of Mpumalanga. siSwati and Swazi are two names for one language. If you have been quoted separately for each, you were quoted twice for the same booking. It is the national language of Eswatini and the home language of 2.8 percent of South Africans at the 2022 census, mostly along the Mpumalanga side of the border, and the two populations arrive in the US through different routes: students and workers from Eswatini, family petitions from South Africa.

Volume in this language is small and we would rather say so than dress it up. Most Siswati enquiries we take are answered in one email, because the document the caller is holding needs no translator at all.

Siswati or Zulu on an Interpreter Booking

Start here, because it is where the money and the accuracy go missing. Siswati and Zulu are both Nguni languages and close enough that a Zulu interpreter can hold a routine clinic conversation with a Siswati speaker, which is exactly why substitution happens so often: it half works, and nobody notices until it matters. At an asylum credibility interview, a deposition or a cross-examination it stops working. The vocabulary and pronunciation diverge on ordinary words, and a speaker from rural Eswatini falls behind a Zulu interpreter running at courtroom speed.

Siswati Translation Around an English Eswatini Certificate

Eswatini’s Ministry of Home Affairs prints birth, death and marriage certificates in English, and its civil registration records run back to around 1905, with earlier material held in Pretoria. Nothing on that certificate needs a Siswati translator. What does need one is everything the family produced to explain the certificate.

Swaziland or Eswatini on a Certified Siswati Document

The country was Swaziland until 2018. Any Siswati letter, affidavit or church record written before then names it that way, and so does the passport of anyone who has not renewed since. A translator who helpfully modernizes the name has created a discrepancy between the translation and the document it supports, which is the sort of thing that generates a request for evidence rather than resolving one.

Siswati Statements for a Marriage Under Swazi Law and Custom

Eswatini registers marriages down two separate tracks and they are not interchangeable. A civil rites marriage is registered by the marriage officer on form BMD 3; a marriage under Eswatini law and custom is registered on form BMD 4, with witnesses to the ceremony and a chief’s representative appearing in person. Neither can be registered once a spouse has died, which closes the door on a good many late attempts to document a union.

That leaves families proving a customary marriage with what they have: statements from the two sides, an account of the ceremony, the record of what was paid. Those come to us in Siswati. Siswati Interpreters for Asylum Interviews and Hospital Appointments

Schooling in both countries runs in English, so the applicant usually needs no interpreter and the parent does. The typical Siswati assignment is an older relative at a green card interview, a patient describing pain, or an applicant whose account of what happened has to come out in the language it happened in. No state examines court interpreters in Siswati, so a court works with an otherwise qualified linguist and decides for itself whom it accepts; we are not appointed by any court.

Language assistance at no charge to the patient is owed by any provider receiving federal health funding, under 45 CFR 92.201, and that is worth knowing before a family agrees to let a son interpret a psychiatric assessment.
