Sichuanese is a Southwestern Mandarin variety of the Sichuan basin, close enough to the standard that many speakers move between the two without noticing and far enough away that an older relative can be left behind in an appointment. Nothing is written in it. Sichuanese carries four tones whose contours differ from the standard and a stock of everyday words a northerner simply does not have. Comprehension is asymmetric: a Chengdu speaker generally follows standard Mandarin more easily than a Beijing speaker follows Chengdu. That asymmetry is why so many Sichuan bookings are fine and a few go badly wrong.

Sichuan Documents and Why They Are Standard Chinese

A family from Chengdu, Mianyang, Leshan or a county town files exactly what any other mainland applicant files, in Simplified characters. There is no Sichuanese script and no provincial variation in the paperwork itself, so the translator is selected for the document type and the register rather than for the speech of the household.

That matters commercially. Agencies that quote a rare-language rate for a Sichuan file are charging for a word on the order form. The work in front of us is a Chinese translation with a handful of Sichuan-specific pitfalls, and the pitfalls are the reason to pick a translator who has seen these documents before.

Certified Sichuan Translation for USCIS and Consular Filings

The core is the notarial certificate, the gong zheng shu, issued by a notary public office covering the household registration and reciting the birth, the marriage, the kinship or the absence of a criminal record. It usually arrives as a bound bilingual booklet, with the household register behind it and, where relevant, a marriage certificate and older handwritten entries that carry no English at all.

Chongqing and Sichuan on a Certified Birthplace Translation

Here is the trap specific to this province. Chongqing was part of Sichuan Province until 1997, when it was separated out as a directly administered municipality. One person can therefore hold an older document naming Sichuan and a newer one naming Chongqing for the identical town, and an officer comparing a birth record against a petition sees two birthplaces.

It is entirely ordinary and it still generates questions when nothing on the page explains it. We reproduce each issuing authority exactly as printed, never modernize a place name into its current form, and add a translator’s note setting out the 1997 change so the reader can see one town rather than two. The same discipline applies to counties that were merged or renamed inside the province.

Sichuan Diploma and Academic Transcript Translation

The basin holds a large university sector and a steady flow of graduates into US programs and employment, so academic files are a bigger share of Sichuan work than of most Chinese regional work. One course of study in China produces two separate pieces of paper and applicants routinely send only one: a graduation certificate showing the program was completed, and a degree certificate showing the degree was conferred. They are distinct credentials and it is possible to hold one without the other.

We translate both as they stand, render the institution name as the university itself uses it in English where that is established, and leave the US equivalence to the evaluator, because deciding it is their job and an over-helpful translation makes their work harder. When a Sichuan Interpreter Beats a Mandarin One

Three situations, and outside them a standard Mandarin interpreter is the better booking because it is faster and no less accurate. The first is an older speaker from a rural county who never used the standard comfortably. The second is testimony, where a witness under pressure reverts to the speech they think in and a half-followed word becomes a contradiction in the transcript. The third is a medical history, where the vocabulary for symptoms and home remedies is exactly where regional words sit.

No state examines court interpreters in Sichuanese, though several certify Mandarin, so a hearing normally gets a certified Mandarin interpreter who also speaks Sichuanese, and we name which credential covers which language rather than letting the distinction blur. A hospital taking federal funds has to supply the interpreter at no cost to the patient. Courts and attorneys instruct us directly, and Prism holds no court appointment of any kind.
