Sena runs along the lower Zambezi: the Mozambican provinces of Sofala, Tete, Zambezia and Manica, and over the frontier in the Chikwawa and Nsanje districts of southern Malawi. It is a Bantu language of perhaps two million speakers and it is not a language of administration in either country.

Sena Document Translation Usually Means Portuguese to English

Mozambique keeps its civil registry in Portuguese through the Conservatórias do Registo Civil under the Ministry of Justice, which issue the certidão de nascimento and, in fuller form, the certidão narrativa completa from the conservatory of the place of birth. Registration is free within 120 days and carries a small fee afterwards, which is why so many Sena families hold a certificate issued years after the event.

For USCIS the requirement at 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) is a complete English translation certified as accurate, and for a Mozambican file that is a Portuguese translation. Malawian Sena Speakers and Records Already in English

Cross into Chikwawa or Nsanje and the paperwork changes language rather than character. Malawi’s National Registration Bureau issues birth certificates in English, and school and police records follow. A Sena speaker from that side of the border commonly needs nothing translated, and we will put that in writing so a caseworker who has asked for a certified translation can close the request.

The exception is worth knowing. Where a Malawian file leans on a church record from a Presbyterian or Catholic mission, or a village headman’s letter, those may carry Sena or Chichewa entries, and those pages we do translate. One family often holds documents from both countries, since the Sena were split by a colonial line rather than by any move of their own.

Certified Sena Translation of Letters, Church Records and Statements

When a document really is in Sena, it is almost always handwritten and almost always personal. A baptism entry from a mission in Sofala. A régulo’s letter confirming where a family lived and who belonged to it. A statement written by a cousin who never learned to write Portuguese comfortably. These are short jobs that carry long consequences, because they are frequently the only evidence of a relationship or a residence.

Sena has no single settled spelling in personal use, and the Mozambican and Malawian writing habits differ, so a letter can render the same word two ways in four lines. Whatever stands on the page is what we render: an illegible word is marked illegible rather than reconstructed, and crossings-out are recorded rather than tidied away. Spelling a Sena Name in a Certified Document Translation

A Sena name written down by a registrar trained in Portuguese and the same name written down by one trained in English come out differently, and in a border family both versions exist. Add a Christian baptismal name used at church and not at home, and a passport that follows one clerk rather than the other, and a file can look like two people.

Sena Interpreters for USCIS Interviews, Clinics and Hearings

Ask which Sena first. Malawian Sena has drifted far enough from the Mozambican variety that some linguists count it separately, and the Barwe and Podzo forms sit further out again, so the speaker’s district decides the assignment. A Sena speaker who went to school also carries Portuguese in Mozambique, or English and Chichewa in Malawi, and the person who genuinely needs Sena is usually an older relative whose Portuguese sounds better than it is.

No state certifies court interpreters in Sena, so a court works from a qualified interpreter whose background it can hear on the record, and in practice almost all Sena sessions run by video or telephone. On the hospital side, 45 CFR 92.201 obliges a provider that takes federal financial assistance to supply the interpreter at no charge to the patient, and Sena families rarely know they may ask for one by name. Bookings run through USCIS interview interpreting, medical interpreting or court interpreting, and Prism acts as a private agency with no court appointment.
