Nzebi Translation Services

Nzebi sits on a border. It is spoken across southern Gabon, in the Ngounie and Haut-Ogooue country, and over the line in the Niari region of Congo-Brazzaville, with something in the order of 140,000 speakers on figures gathered in the early 2000s. Both countries administer in French.

Nzebi, Njebi or Bandjabi: Booking the Right Interpreter

Give us the spelling you were given, then give us the country and the district. Those two facts do more for the assignment than anything else. Nzebi runs over several closely related dialects and a speaker from the Niari does not sound quite like a speaker from the Ngounie, though the two understand each other without difficulty in ordinary talk.

The other half of intake is whether Nzebi is wanted at all. Almost everyone who speaks it went through school in French, and for a working-age applicant a French interpreter is the better and faster booking. We say so. Where it stops being true is with an older parent who never settled into French, or with a witness recounting a village matter in the language it was argued in, and that difference is worth three minutes on the phone before anyone is booked. Gabonese and Congolese Civil Records in an Nzebi File

Two neighboring countries, two procedures, and clients routinely assume they are the same. In Gabon a birth is declared at the etat civil office of the mairie and produces an acte de naissance; where the declaration was never made, a tribunal de premiere instance issues a jugement suppletif that stands in its place. Request the copie integrale rather than the extrait, so that the marginal annotations come across.

In the Republic of the Congo the declaration of birth is valid for thirty days. Past that, under the family code the parents obtain a certificate of non-declaration of birth from the mairie and take it to the tribunal, which issues a late declaration. Either route produces a French document, and either one is translated as what it actually is: a court act is rendered as a court act, with the evidence and the reasoning kept, not summarized into certificate form. Certified Nzebi Translation of Statements and Recordings

When something really is in Nzebi it is usually spoken rather than written. A voice note from a relative, a recorded call filed as evidence, a statement taken from someone who does not write the language and dictated to a family member. We transcribe and translate in parallel, timestamp the passages, and mark overlapping or inaudible speech rather than filling in a plausible line.

Code switching is constant and it matters. Speakers move between Nzebi and French inside a single sentence, and where an English translation flattens that, a reader loses track of which parts of an account the speaker had words of their own for. Lead Times on an Nzebi Interpreter Booking

There is no local pool of Nzebi interpreters anywhere in the United States, and we would rather tell you that at the start than discover it two days before a hearing. Phone and video are the normal way an Nzebi assignment is covered, and they work perfectly well for an interview, a consultation or a remote appearance. Putting someone physically in the room depends on one scarce linguist agreeing to travel, so that is quoted with a lead time rather than a promise.

No state tests court interpreters in Nzebi, so a court works with a qualified interpreter and we confirm in writing to the clerk what that means before the date.
