Certified Translation for Makhuwa Speakers Starts With Portuguese

A Mozambican birth record is a certidao de nascimento issued in Portuguese by a Conservatoria do Registo Civil, and marriage, death and criminal record certificates follow the same pattern. Those documents are Portuguese-to-English work and belong on our Portuguese translation desk, with a translator who has seen Mozambican formats rather than one meeting the layout for the first time.

Mozambican Portuguese is not Brazilian Portuguese and it is not quite European Portuguese either in its official register, and the registry vocabulary carries local usages that a translator working only from Lisbon documents will render loosely. Cabo Delgado Displacement and Makhuwa Statement Translation

The insurgency in Cabo Delgado has not stopped. IOM's displacement tracking put 661,532 people internally displaced across Mozambique in February 2026, about 72 percent of them in Cabo Delgado itself, with Metuge, Mueda and Pemba carrying the heaviest concentrations. People who leave a district under attack do not leave with a folder of certificates.

Which Makhuwa Variety a Translator or Interpreter Needs

Makhuwa is a cluster rather than a single settled language. Central Makhuwa around Nampula functions as the standard; Meetto in the north, Shirima to the west and Marrevone on the coast diverge far enough that some references list them separately. A translator from Nampula reading a Meetto declaration will get most of it and miss some of it, and the missed part may be the material fact.

So we ask for the district before we assign, not after. If you do not know it, the family does, and it is a thirty-second question. Where the variety is outside what our Makhuwa readers cover, we will tell you that rather than deliver a translation with quiet gaps in it.

Makhuwa Name Spelling on a Certified English Translation

Makhuwa orthography is still settling, and a Portuguese-speaking registrar writing down a Makhuwa name does it by ear. The result is that one family name appears in three forms across a birth record, a school certificate and a passport, and the differences are not typos in any meaningful sense.

An adjudicator who is not shown the connection may read three people where there is one. The English text follows the passport, each source spelling is printed exactly as it stands on its own document, and a translator's note lists the forms and states plainly that they belong to one person.

Sourcing a Makhuwa Interpreter From a Very Small Pool

Be realistic about numbers. Mozambican migration to the United States is small, the Makhuwa-speaking share of it is smaller, and no US city has anything resembling a local roster. Nearly every Makhuwa assignment we take runs by phone or video, and an in-person booking needs lead time and often travel. Any agency that promises you a Makhuwa interpreter in a suburban courtroom tomorrow morning is telling you what you want to hear.

No state examines court interpreters in this language, so a court works with a qualified interpreter and we set that out for the clerk in writing before the date. Prism takes the work as a private agency with no court appointment. Where a hospital or a school has assumed that Portuguese will do, the check is simple: many younger speakers are comfortable in Portuguese, while older people from rural districts are not, and a patient nodding along is not the same as a patient understanding.
