Krio Translation Services

Krio is the language most of Sierra Leone speaks, an English-lexifier creole with its own grammar and a vocabulary drawn from English, Yoruba, Igbo and Portuguese. It is not English spoken loosely, and a recording or a statement in Krio needs a Krio linguist rather than an English typist. The Krio language grew in Freetown among liberated Africans, Nova Scotian settlers and Maroons resettled there from the late eighteenth century, and it spread outward until nearly everyone in the country uses it, most of them as a second language alongside Mende, Temne or Limba. That history is why an American listener hears English words and assumes the rest will follow.

Krio Transcription Needs a Krio Linguist, Not an English Ear

Give a Krio recording to an English-speaking transcriptionist and you will get back something readable, fluent and quietly false. The transcriber hears familiar words, hears what sounds like a grammatical error, and corrects it. What has actually been corrected is the tense, or the negation, or the aspect, which in an asylum record or a criminal exhibit is the part that carries the weight.

Our practice for a Krio exhibit is two columns: the Krio transcribed as spoken, the English rendering beside it, both time-stamped, with inaudible passages marked and the frequent switches into English or into Mende shown where they occur. That layout lets an attorney, a judge or an expert check any line against the audio. It also makes clear that a translation happened at all, which a monolingual English transcript conceals. Sierra Leonean Certificates Are in English, Not Krio

English is Sierra Leone's official language, so a birth certificate, a marriage certificate or a police clearance arrives in English and 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) has nothing to bite on. Current records come from the National Civil Registration Authority, established by the National Civil Registration Act of 2016, which issues securitized and serially numbered certificates linked to a National Identification Number. Anyone born before that system holds an older registry entry, or nothing.

Certified Krio Translation of Statements and Messages

What actually comes to a Krio translator is private writing and speech. A witness statement taken before an attorney was retained. Text messages and WhatsApp threads filed as exhibits. A letter from a relative in Freetown or Bo. Voice notes. Occasionally a church or lodge record.

Written Krio has no single settled spelling in everyday use, so people write by ear and the same word appears three ways on one page. That is a reading problem, not a legitimacy problem, and a translator who reads informal Krio handles it without fuss. Each certified job comes back with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy naming Krio as the source language, which matters: a certificate that says English on a Krio exhibit invites the exact confusion this page is about. Krio Interpreters for Asylum Interviews and Hearings

The person who most needs a Krio interpreter is usually the person least likely to ask for one. Someone who manages a benefits call in English will still miss the difference between two similar questions from a judge, and pride keeps them from saying so. For asylum, court and medical work we assign Krio and let the client decline it rather than the other way round.

The largest Sierra Leonean community in the country sits in the Washington metropolitan area, particularly Prince George's and Montgomery counties in Maryland, and a good deal of the asylum and court work follows it. Krio has no court certification exam in any state, so a judge qualifies the interpreter on the record, and we supply them as a private agency holding no court appointment. English into Krio Translation for Clinics and Outreach

Requests come from hospitals, health departments and school districts carrying duties under Title VI at 42 U.S.C. 2000d and, for health programs drawing federal funds, under 45 CFR 92.201: Krio versions of consent forms, notices and public health material. It can work, and it needs a decision first: most Krio speakers were schooled in English and read English more readily than written Krio, and there is no orthography they were all taught.
