Kaqchikel or Cakchiquel Interpreter: One Language, Two Spellings

Kaqchikel is the spelling used by the Academia de Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala. Cakchiquel is the older Spanish form, and it is the one still printed on many court dockets, USCIS notices and agency language lists. They name the same language and the same interpreters. Book under whichever name your paperwork uses and tell us which, so the confirmation matches the record.

Kaqchikel Interpreter, Not a K'iche' Interpreter

Kaqchikel and K’iche’ belong to the same branch of the Mayan family and share vocabulary and structure, which is why a scheduler with a short list reaches for whichever is free. They are only partly intelligible. A K’iche’ interpreter will catch words and lose sentences, and in a credible fear interview the lost sentences are the case. Tz’utujil, spoken around Lake Atitlán, is close again and still a separate booking.

The same caution applies to relaying through Spanish. If the person grew up speaking Kaqchikel, an interpreter working in Spanish cannot recover what the person meant but could not quite say in Spanish.

Kaqchikel Interpreter for Asylum and Credible Fear Interviews

A credible fear screening or an asylum interview turns on the applicant’s own account: the order of events, the threats, the names of people and places. The interpreter carries each answer over whole, including hamlet names that a Spanish registrar may have recorded under a saint’s name on the birth record, and they flag an unfamiliar term instead of guessing at it.

If a declaration was prepared through a Spanish-speaking intermediary, ask us to check it against the applicant’s Kaqchikel before the interview. Differences found then can be dealt with; found by the officer, they become credibility questions. Kaqchikel Court Interpreter for Immigration and State Court

No state certifies court interpreters in Kaqchikel or in any other Mayan language of Guatemala, so the judge qualifies the interpreter on the record from training and experience. Kaqchikel Medical Interpreter

Federal health funding carries a duty under 45 CFR 92.201 to give the patient language assistance at no cost, in Kaqchikel if that is the patient’s language, not in the Spanish the hospital’s phone line happens to offer. A Kaqchikel interpreter physically in the room usually needs a week or two, and outside Los Angeles, Houston and the New York area it may not be possible at all; when that is the answer we say so rather than sending a K’iche’ speaker.
