Kannada Translation Services

Karnataka records rendered into certified English for immigration filings, universities and evaluators, with every name variant accounted for.

Karnataka issues a good deal of its paperwork bilingually, so the useful Kannada translation job is narrower and fussier than callers expect: the Kannada half of a certificate, a village registrar's handwriting, an affidavit sworn where no birth was ever recorded. Prism Language Solutions prepares those as certified English translations for USCIS, employers, courts and credential evaluators, each with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, and supplies Kannada interpreters for the appointments where an applicant's parent is the one being asked.

The American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 counts roughly 87,000 Kannada speakers at home in the United States, the biggest single cluster in the San Jose area and the rest spread across California, Texas and New Jersey. Only about one in nine reports speaking English less than very well. That ratio explains the shape of the work. Kannada arrives here mainly with engineers and physicians who file in English, so the translation orders come out of their documents rather than out of any difficulty they have themselves.

Which makes this a page about paperwork more than about language. The questions we field are about a marksheet whose grading scale an evaluator cannot read, a father's birth record that was never registered, and a name printed four different ways across four Karnataka documents. Those are the parts that stall a petition, and none of them is solved by translating faster.

Kannada Degree and Marksheet Translation for H-1B Filings

Most Kannada files that reach an attorney are employment files. A Visvesvaraya Technological University or Bangalore University degree, semester marksheets, a provisional certificate, an experience letter. Nearly all of it prints in English. What needs a Kannada translator is the surrounding material: a convocation endorsement, a seal, a duplicate-issue note, a state board school certificate from the years before English became standard on them.

The grading is the part worth a translator's note rather than a conversion. Indian engineering marksheets report marks out of a maximum, sometimes with a class awarded, and turning that into an American letter grade or GPA is the evaluator's job and not ours. We render the scale as printed, state the maximum, and say nothing about equivalence. Credential services want the raw figures. See academic transcript translation and diploma translation.

Initials and Name Order in a Certified Kannada Translation

This is the single most productive source of Requests for Evidence on Karnataka files. A Kannada name is often built as village initial, then father's initial, then the given name, so a passport clerk facing a US-style form has to decide what counts as a surname. One document expands the initials, another drops them, a third pushes the father's name into the family name box.

Add romanization drift on top, Venkatesh against Venkatesha, Lakshmi against Laxmi, Gowda against Gouda, and one person becomes three across a bundle. Our practice is fixed: translate each document exactly as it reads, use the passport form of the name in the body of the translation, and attach a note that lists every variant on the originals and explains the initial convention in one sentence. An officer who can see the pattern does not open a file. Attorneys assembling multi-document petitions should look at immigration attorneys.

Kannada Birth Certificate Translation from eJanMa and Village Records

Karnataka registers births and deaths through the eJanMa system operated by the state health department. A certificate issued by a city corporation through eJanMa is normally bilingual and only its Kannada fields need rendering. A rural birth registered by the village accountant through the Nada Kacheri at hobli level may be handwritten and wholly in Kannada, with the numerals written in Kannada as well.

Beyond that, births from the 1950s and 1960s frequently were never registered at all. Where the parent of an applicant has no record, the file usually rests on a school leaving certificate carrying a date of birth, a non-availability certificate from the taluk office, and a sworn affidavit of birth. Secondary evidence of that kind is contemplated by 8 CFR 103.2(b)(2) where the primary record cannot be obtained. We translate each item under its own title, including the notary attestation on the affidavit, rather than presenting the set as though it were a certificate. See birth certificate translation.

Apostille and Attestation on a Kannada Document Translation

The Ministry of External Affairs is the only body that issues an Indian apostille, and it does so after the issuing state has authenticated the document; India has been a party to the 1961 Convention since 2005. Karnataka degrees destined for an employer or a university outside the United States usually travel that route, and the sticker itself carries text that belongs in the translation.

For a USCIS filing none of this applies. The federal requirement is a complete English translation certified as complete and accurate, and adding an apostille buys nothing. Where a receiving body genuinely asks for one, arrange it in India before the pages come to us, so the apostille and any state endorsement are translated in the same pass. More on apostille translation.

Kannada Interpreters for Hospital and USCIS Appointments

Interpreting requests follow the family rather than the applicant: a visiting father at a cardiology clinic, a mother called to an adjustment interview after an I-130, an elder taking the civics test through an interpreter under the age-based English exemption. Ask the hospital first: a provider receiving federal financial assistance owes the patient an interpreter at no charge, and families rarely know that before they call us.

One question to ask before booking. Coastal Karnataka families from Mangalore and Udupi often grew up speaking Tulu or Konkani, with Kannada as the school language. Such a speaker will get through a waiting-room conversation politely and lose the sentence that mattered. Ask what the person uses at home, not where they are from. No state runs a certification exam for Kannada court interpreters, so a judge takes a qualified interpreter on the record; Prism is a private agency and holds no court appointment. See medical interpreting and USCIS interview interpreting.

Kannada Translation Prices and Turnaround

Short certified documents are quoted from about $24.95 per page as a US market guide, and longer material by the source word. Bilingual certificates are cheaper than they look, because only the Kannada content is new work, and we say so rather than charging for a page we are mostly copying. A handwritten village record or an affidavit with a notary block is quoted after review. One and two page items are usually delivered within 24 hours of a confirmed quote. The pricing page carries the ranges.

Questions we get asked

My Karnataka birth certificate is already in English and Kannada. Do I pay for the whole page?
No. An eJanMa certificate from a city corporation is usually bilingual, so the work is the Kannada fields, the seal text and any handwritten correction. We quote on that basis. If a page turns out to need nothing at all we tell you and remove it from the order.
How do you handle initials in a Kannada name on a certified translation?
We reproduce them as the document prints them and use the passport form of the name in the body of the translation, with a note explaining that Kannada initials usually stand for a village and a father's name. Expanding them silently, or moving one into the surname box, is how two records stop matching each other.
My father was born in a Karnataka village in 1958 and there is no birth certificate. What do we file?
A non-availability certificate from the taluk office, a school leaving certificate showing his date of birth, and an affidavit of birth sworn by someone with direct knowledge. Secondary evidence is contemplated where a primary record cannot be obtained. We translate each in full, including the notary attestation, and describe each for what it actually is.
Do you convert Indian marks into an American GPA on the translation?
No, and you should be wary of a translator who offers to. We render the marks, the maximum and the class exactly as printed and add a note on the scale. Deciding the US equivalent belongs to the credential evaluator, and a translation that has already decided it makes their work harder.
