Hungarian puts the family name first, and American forms do not expect that. Nagy János is Mr Nagy, given name János, and on a Hungarian certificate that is the order you will read. Copy it into a US form field by field and the applicant becomes John Nagy in one place and Nagy John in another, which is how a file ends up carrying two people. The translation has to label which is which rather than silently swapping them, because swapping without a note means the translation no longer matches the document it is attached to.

The married name is the second surprise. Hungarian offers several legal forms of a married woman’s name, including the traditional one built from the husband’s full name plus the suffix -né, so a certificate can record a woman as Nagy Jánosné without her own given name appearing anywhere on it. That is not an error and it is not an alias. We translate the form as printed and explain it in a note, because an officer comparing a marriage certificate against a passport otherwise sees a name that does not exist on any other document in the file.

Certified Hungarian Anyakonyvi Kivonat Translation

The workhorse Hungarian document is the anyakönyvi kivonat, the extract from the civil register issued by a registrar at a local government office, in birth, marriage and death versions. Hungary has run a central electronic register for over a decade, so extracts are usually printed on request and a recent print date on a 1950s birth does not mean the record is new. We translate the print date and the registration date both, as they stand.

What earns the fee is the rest of the page: the register entry number, the place of registration, the parents’ names in Hungarian order, and the notes section, which is where a later marriage, a divorce, an adoption or a change of name is recorded. A translation that renders the boxes and skips the notes is the one that draws a Request for Evidence. Hungarian Apostille and Certified Document Translation

Hungary has been an Apostille Convention party since 1973 and divides the work between three bodies. Public documents issued by ordinary authorities, registry extracts included, are apostilled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Documents from judicial authorities go to the Ministry of Justice. Documents drawn up or authenticated by a civil law notary go to the Hungarian Chamber of Civil Law Notaries, which has handled them since 2008.

Translation into Hungarian for Citizenship by Descent

Simplified naturalization has brought a steady stream of American applicants with a Hungarian grandparent or great-grandparent, and the translation requirement is the part people discover late. Hungarian law reserves certified translation into Hungarian to the state translation office, the body long known as OFFI and now named on its own pages as MKIFK, under a 1986 decree, with one narrow exception for company register documents into EU languages. A Hungarian consul can also produce the translation.

That means a US agency cannot certify a translation for this purpose, and any agency that says otherwise is selling you a second bill. What we can honestly do is prepare an accurate Hungarian rendering of your US vital records for the consulate or the state office to work from, translate the Hungarian-language ancestor documents into English so you can read what you are filing, and tell you what the sequence is: state-level apostille on the American certificates first, then the Hungarian translation, then the application at the embassy or consulate that handles your state.

Hungarian Diploma and Academic Transcript Translation

Hungarian marks run from 5 down to 1, where 5 is excellent and 1 is the only failing grade, and the numbers are the exact inverse of what an American reader assumes on sight. A transcript full of fours and fives looks mediocre to anyone who reads it as a five-point scale where five is a pass mark. We print the Hungarian word beside the number, jeles, jó, közepes, elégséges, elégtelen, and state the direction of the scale in a note.

Hungarian Business and Legal Document Translation

The commercial side is mostly automotive, pharmaceutical and shared-service work, plus the litigation and estate matters that follow a family across an ocean. Company register extracts, supply agreements, employment documentation and Hungarian court filings come through regularly. Hungarian sentences are long and heavily inflected, so a clause that reads as one thought in Hungarian often has to be rebuilt rather than tracked word by word, and a translator who tracks it word by word produces something technically correct and unusable in a filing. Questions we get asked

My Hungarian birth certificate shows my surname before my given name. Will the translation swap them?

Not silently. We keep the order the document uses and label the fields, so the translation says which name is the family name and which is the given name. That way the translation matches the original on its face, and whoever completes the US form has what they need to fill the boxes correctly.

What is the name ending in -ne on my mother's marriage certificate?

It is one of the legal forms of a married woman's name in Hungary, built from the husband's name with the suffix -ne, so the wife's own given name may not appear on the certificate at all. It is not an alias or a clerical error. We translate it as printed and add a note explaining the form, which usually answers the question before it is asked.

Will your Hungarian translation be accepted for a simplified naturalization application?

Not as the certifying party. Hungarian law reserves certified translation into Hungarian to the state translation office, and a Hungarian consul can also make one. My register extract was printed last month but the birth was in 1954. Is that a problem?

No. Hungary issues extracts from a central electronic register on request, so a recent print date on an old registration is ordinary. The translation shows the date of registration and the date of issue separately, as the document does, which is what a reviewing officer expects to see.
