Guarani is not like the other indigenous American languages on this site, and the difference changes how a job is run. It is co-official with Spanish in Paraguay, spoken across the whole society rather than by a marginalized minority, taught in schools, used in the Senate, and regulated by a state Academia de la Lengua Guarani created by the 2010 Ley de Lenguas. It is also official in Bolivia under the 2009 constitution. Nobody in Paraguay treats it as a village language.

Which is exactly why it gets booked late. Almost every Paraguayan speaks some Spanish, so a Spanish interpreter is assigned, the hearing starts, and the witness moves into Guarani at the point where the detail matters. Paraguay's 2024 household survey found 38.6 percent of people using both languages at home and around 28 percent mainly Guarani, but the useful number is the split by place: 53.1 percent of rural Paraguayans use Guarani at home against 16.3 percent in the cities. Guarani, Spanish and the Paraguayan Civil Record

The Registro del Estado Civil, under the Ministry of Justice, issues birth, marriage and death certificates, and the cedula de identidad comes from the identification department of the National Police. All of it is written in Spanish whatever the family speaks, so a Guarani translation request is usually a certified Spanish to English job under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), priced as Spanish work. The exceptions are real but specific. Municipal letters, parish and church papers, school documents from the interior and the sworn statements an applicant writes in their own hand can carry Guarani or Jopara, and a Spanish-only translator will skip the lines they cannot read or guess at them. We check what language each page is in before the quote goes out.

Jopara and What a Guarani Interpreter Actually Hears

Everyday Paraguayan speech is Jopara: Guarani grammar carrying Spanish vocabulary, switching inside a single sentence, with numbers, dates and institutional words often arriving in Spanish and the rest in Guarani. It is not broken language and it is not a transitional stage. It is how people talk.

An interpreter with only one of the two languages hears half of a Jopara answer. That is the practical argument for booking Guarani rather than Spanish for anyone from the interior, any older relative, and any witness describing home, family or events at a distance. We brief the interpreter to render what was said, Jopara included, rather than tidying it into clean Spanish and then into clean English.

Guarani Interpreters for Court, USCIS and Hospital Appointments

The Paraguayan population in the United States is small, in the low tens of thousands, so almost all Guarani assignments run by video or phone and lead time matters more than it does for a common language. No state certifies court interpreters in Guarani, so a bench seats an otherwise qualified interpreter on the record; we operate as a private agency and hold no court appointment.

Many judges prefer a relay arrangement, with a certified Spanish court interpreter on the record and the Guarani interpreter working between the witness and the Spanish. It is workable, and it is worth explaining to the clerk before the hearing rather than discovering at the bench. For a credible fear or asylum interview we push for Guarani directly, because a flat, short answer given in a second language reads on the record as evasion. Certified Guarani Translation of Statements and Church Records

Where Guarani text does appear in a US filing, it tends to be the part that carries the human content rather than the dates: a declaration written by a grandmother, a letter from a parish priest, a note from a municipal office, a recorded message from a relative still in Caaguazu or San Pedro. Those go to a translator who reads Guarani, not to a Spanish desk.

Guarani Names and Spelling on a Certified Translation

Guarani has a fixed official orthography, set by the Academia de la Lengua Guarani, with the nasal marks and the puso, the glottal stop written as an apostrophe. Paraguayan records do not always follow it. A place name or a surname from the countryside can appear in Guarani spelling on a church paper and in a Spanish-ized form on the cedula, and a US form will then strip the apostrophe and the tilde and produce a third version.

We spell personal names to the travel document, print each source spelling exactly as it stands, and explain the relationship in a translator's note. Where a Guarani place name has a standard Spanish equivalent we give both, because an officer checking a map should not have to guess.

My Paraguayan birth certificate is in Spanish. Do I need a Guarani translator?

No. The Registro del Estado Civil writes in Spanish, so the certified translation is Spanish to English and is priced accordingly. Send the whole bundle anyway: if a church record, a municipal letter or a handwritten statement in the file carries Guarani, we quote that part separately.

The client speaks Spanish. Do we still need a Guarani interpreter?

It depends where they grew up and what the appointment is for. Paraguayans from the cities usually manage in Spanish; more than half of rural Paraguayans use Guarani at home, and that is the person whose account goes thin under questioning in Spanish. For a routine naturalization interview Spanish is often fine. For a credible fear interview it often is not.

What is Jopara, and does it affect a translation?

Jopara is the everyday mixture of Guarani grammar with Spanish vocabulary, switching mid-sentence. It affects both directions: a Spanish-only translator misreads the Guarani half, and a Guarani purist misses the Spanish half. Can a Guarani interpreter appear in court by video?

Yes, and for most courts that is how it happens, since the speaker pool in the United States is small. Some judges prefer a relay setup with a certified Spanish court interpreter on the record and the Guarani interpreter working through them. We set that up with the clerk in advance rather than leaving it to the hearing.
