Greek has been a shrinking home language in the United States for four decades. Greek Medical Interpreter for Hospital and Nursing Home Care

A large share of our Greek medical requests come from hospital units and long-term care facilities: an admission after a fall, a dementia screening, a nursing home care-plan meeting with the whole family on speakerphone. Any provider that takes federal financial assistance owes the patient free language assistance and may not rely on a family member to interpret except in an emergency. A granddaughter rephrasing a prognosis to protect her grandmother is being kind, and the physician still does not learn what was understood.

Cypriot Greek and Regional Speech: Choosing a Greek Interpreter

Cypriot Greek is written like Standard Modern Greek and spoken quite differently, with its own vocabulary and pronunciation, and a mainland interpreter who has not worked with it can lose the thread of a fast answer. The same caution applies, to a lesser degree, to Cretan and to island speech. None of this matters for a short appointment with a speaker comfortable in the standard language. It matters a great deal in a deposition or a psychiatric assessment, where the exact word is the evidence.

So add one line to the booking: where the person grew up. For Cyprus we look for an interpreter with Cypriot experience, and if the date makes that impossible we tell you before you rely on the session.

Greek Court Interpreter for Probate and Guardianship

Greek is not one of the eighteen languages tested by the national oral exam most state court programs use, so a Greek interpreter in a state court is qualified by the judge on the record or drawn from a registered list. We send the interpreter's background with the confirmation so that step takes minutes rather than eating into the hearing.

The Greek court work we see is weighted toward estates and family: contested wills, guardianship petitions, elder financial abuse cases, and depositions of relatives living in Greece who testify by video. Testimony about family land and bank accounts runs long, so the interpreter works consecutively with notes, and attorneys should share names, village names, property descriptions and account details beforehand. Greek Interpreter for a Naturalization or Marriage Interview

Naturalization accounts for much of our Greek USCIS work. Greek-speaking applicants aged 50 or older with 20 years as a permanent resident, or 55 or older with 15 years, are exempt from the English requirement and may take the civics test in Greek with an interpreter. That exemption is often the reason a long-time green card holder finally files. The other recurring case is the marriage-based interview for a spouse from Greece or Cyprus.
