The language, also written Bube, belongs to Bioko, the island that holds the capital Malabo, and about 51,000 people spoke it there in 2011. Before assigning anyone we ask the speaker's village or district, because the northern, southern and central-eastern varieties of the island differ.

Spanish is the main official language of Equatorial Guinea and the language of its schools, ministries and courts. An applicant from Bioko is therefore often offered a Spanish interpreter by default, and sometimes that is the right call. Bubi Interpreter for Asylum Claims From Bioko

Bubi identity sits at the center of many Equatoguinean claims. After attacks on Bioko in January 1998, hundreds of Bubi were detained; Amnesty International observed the summary military trial held that May, recorded allegations of torture and named many of the accused prisoners of conscience. Claimants describing that period, or events tied to the self-determination movement founded in 1993, name people, prisons and organizations that a Spanish interpreter from another country may not recognize.

For an affirmative interview the applicant brings the interpreter, and 8 CFR 208.9(g) disqualifies a witness, the attorney and anyone representing the government of Equatorial Guinea. Bubi or Spanish Interpreter: Deciding Before the Interview

Settle it during preparation, not on the morning of the interview. Run part of a preparation session in Spanish and part in Bubi and see which produces the fuller, more exact account. If Spanish works, we will tell you so and book a Spanish interpreter, which is faster to arrange.

Keep the language consistent across the case where you can. A declaration drafted through Spanish and an interview given in Bubi hand an officer two versions produced through two different interpreters, and small differences in wording turn into questions about credibility.

Bubi Dialects and Choosing an Interpreter by District

Northern, southern and central-eastern Bubi are all spoken on an island of modest size, and a pool this small rarely allows a precise match. So we ask the district or village, tell you where the assigned interpreter's own Bubi comes from, and brief the interpreter to check understanding at the start of the session rather than take it for granted.

Removal proceedings are different: the immigration court arranges and pays for the hearing interpreter, drawing on staff, contract and telephone interpreters.
