Requests for an Acholi interpreter tend to arrive late and under pressure. An asylum interview has been scheduled, a clinic has a patient nobody on staff can talk to, or an attorney needs a declaration taken in the client’s own words before a filing deadline. The speakers come from the districts around Gulu, Kitgum and Pader in northern Uganda and from Eastern Equatoria in South Sudan, most of them through refugee resettlement or asylum. The Census does not count Acholi separately, so nobody can say how many live here, and that uncertainty is itself a reason to call early.

Acholi Interpreter for Asylum and USCIS Interviews

Asylum is where most Acholi interpreting happens. USCIS changed the rule on 13 September 2023: an affirmative asylum applicant who is not proceeding in English must now bring an interpreter to the USCIS interview, and 8 CFR 208.9(g) sets the terms: at least 18, fluent in English and the applicant’s language, and not the attorney, a witness, or a representative of the government the claim is about. Arriving without a competent interpreter can be treated as a failure to appear. For a language this thinly staffed, book as soon as the interview notice lands.

The work itself is exacting. An officer weighs consistency: dates, the order of events, place names, and whether the spoken account matches the written declaration. Our Acholi interpreters render each answer as given, leave pauses and self-corrections where they fall, and ask for a repetition rather than guess at a word. Acholi, Lango or Luo: Booking the Right Interpreter

Acholi belongs to the Luo cluster, and its nearest neighbors, Lango and Alur, share much of its vocabulary. A Lango speaker can carry an Acholi patient through a routine visit. Under questioning, the gaps open in exactly the words that carry the evidence. Our practice is simple, an Acholi speaker gets an Acholi interpreter, and we will tell you plainly when a resettlement agency’s offer of a Lango interpreter is only a stopgap.

A request that just says Luo carries a different risk: it may be filled by a speaker of Dholuo from Kenya, which is a separate language, covered on our Luo page. For South Sudanese clients we add one more question, whether the person would rather work in Juba Arabic, and book whichever language they choose. Give us the country, the district and the setting, and the match is settled before anyone is scheduled.

Acholi Court Interpreter for Immigration and State Court

Acholi has no court interpreter certification exam in any state, so a judge who needs one qualifies the interpreter on the record, asking about training, experience and prior courtroom work. We send that background ahead of time so the bench can decide before the hearing starts. In immigration court the interpreter for the hearing itself is arranged by the court, which contracts for languages outside its staff. What attorneys book from us is the preparation around it: client meetings, the declaration, and a rehearsal of direct and cross-examination.

State court work is less frequent and more varied: a family matter, a protection order, a criminal case with an Acholi-speaking witness. Acholi Medical Interpreter for Refugee Health Appointments

Under 45 CFR 92.201, a hospital or clinic that receives federal financial assistance must provide language assistance free of charge, and it may not rely on an accompanying adult to interpret except in an emergency. A newly resettled family may not know that, and the appointment ends up interpreted by a caseworker with a near language, or by a child. When the provider’s own list has nobody for Acholi, we are the call to make.

Mental health assessments are where the match matters most. The clinician needs the patient’s own words for sleep, fear and memory, and a trauma history rendered through a neighboring language comes out flattened. Acholi Phone and Video Interpreting: Lead Time and Cost

Because Acholi speakers are spread thinly across the country, most of our Acholi sessions run by phone or video. Phone suits a short intake or a call with a caseworker. Video is better for a long interview or anything with a document on screen. In-person interpreting is possible where an Acholi linguist is based within reach of the venue, and it needs more notice.
